Prevention of water accumulation
Water accumulation is a major factor in causing floods and being a breeding ground for mosquitoes. On the 6th of August 2019, the Department of Health (DOH) had declared a national dengue epidemic with 146,062 new cases of dengue from January to July 2019. A proper drainage system would be helpful with the problem of rising dengue cases in the Philippines, even if it doesn’t put a stop to the epidemic, it would always be good to help at least a few more people survive. Drainage systems help displace water which would of course help in lessening flooding.
Removal of wastes and deceased animals
Most people dispose of deceased animals and toxic non-human wastes in their home toilets and sinks, though a major health risk, this is something which would be difficult to stop as most humans want accessibility and ease. The best way to help with this problem is to make it so that when these animals and waste go into the drainage they don’t go anywhere else. This is where the drainage systems are best at, by redirecting all the wastes towards 1 central area which would reduce the possibility of these diseases and wastes harming other people.
Reduction of soil erosion
Over time pockets of still water in soil could lead to said soil eroding. The quality, texture, stability, and structure of the soil can be greatly influenced by the erosion of said soil. Breakdown of aggregates, smaller particles, entire layers of soil, and organic matter could lead to the weakening of the structure of the soil and change of its texture. The changes in texture and structure could lead to negatively affecting the water-holding capacity of the soil, this would lead to the soil being more influenced by extreme conditions such as drought.
